Consultation Videos

Please find below a series of short consultation videos that will help improve your understanding of your parathyroid evaluation, especially as performed at the Parathyroid Center.

  • Choosing A Parathyroid Surgeon

This video is a must see for patients looking for a parathyroid expert.

  • Parathyroid CT Scanning - A Highly Accurate Study For Parathyroid Gland Localization

This consultation describes the role of parathyroid CT scanning in parathyroid gland localization.  In the era of minimally invasive parathyroid surgery, knowing the precise location of abnormal glands prior to the operation is of great importance.  Parathyroid CT scanning has emerged as one of the most accurate localizing studies.  View this consultation video to learn more.

  • Minimally Invasive Parathyroid Surgery Under Local Anesthesia
A short, yet comprehensive video that discusses minimally invasive parathyroid surgery as performed at the Mount Sinai Endocrine Surgery Parathyroid Center.
  • Endoscopic parathyroidectomy
An unedited video clip of an endoscopic transaxillary parathyroidectomy in a patient who forms keloid scars. With this approach, there is no scar on the neck, as the incision is placed in the axilla. In the video, the recurrent laryngeal nerve (nerve to the vocal cords) is being carefully dissected from the large parathyroid adenoma.
  • Minimally Invasive Endoscopic Transaxillary Thyroidectomy

The surgeons at the Endocrine Surgery Parathyroid Center also have considerable expertise in treating other endocrine disorders.  This video demonstrates the technqique of endoscopic thyroidectomy, an approach that leaves no scar on the neck (the incision is placed under the patient's arm pit and the thyroid gland is approached remotely).

  • Preservation of vital structures during endoscopic thyroidectomy

Identification and preservation of pertinent anatomy is critical to performing safe thyroid and parathyroid surgery. Endoscopic transaxillary thyroidectomy provides an illuminated, magnified view of the anatomy to the surgeon and surgical team. In this short video of an endoscopic total thyroidectomy,  the recurrent laryngeal nerve (nerve to the vocal cords) and superior parathyroid gland (brownish structure) are easily seen. The patient was discharged the same day of surgery.
