The surgeons at the Endocrine Surgery Parathyroid Center perform endoscopic parathyroid removal in certain select patients. With the endoscopic transaxillary approach, a small incision is made in the axilla under the arm. A small camera (endoscope) is inserted in the tunnel to allow visualization of the thyroid and parathyroid glands. Another approach that we offer is the video-endoscopic cervical approach whereby the video-endoscope is inserted through a small incision in the neck.
The endoscopic view provides an illuminated, magnified view of the operative field, permitting the surgeon to perform a safe parathyroid procedure. Both focused and bilateral neck explorations can be performed as directed by intraoperative findings and parathyroid hormone levels. The main advantage of endoscopic parathyroidectomy is that the incision and subsequent scar are in a hidden location. More than 90% of our patients go home the same day surgery.
