The Mount Sinai Endocrine Surgery Parathyroid Center receives patients from around the country who have had unsuccessful parathyroid surgery elsewhere. Persistent hyperparathyroidism means that the initial parathyroid operation was not successful in curing the patient. In recurrent hyperparathyroidism, the overactive parathyroid condition returns greater than 6 months from the index parathyroid procedure. In both conditions, a second operation is necessary to cure the persistent condition of hyperparathyroidism.
Reoperative parathyroid surgery requires both expert additional testing to be sure of the location of the abnormal parathyroid as well as an expert surgical team to carry out the operation. The Endocrine Surgery Parathyroid Center has both. Our experts will help to outline a plan to localize the problem and then proceed with the necessary treatment plan to achieve cure. Our expert surgeons are guided by state of the art tools in the operating room including intra-operative parathyroid hormone monitoring and laryngeal nerve monitoring. Most of our patients with persistent or recurrent hyperparathyroidism are discharged the same as surgery; our success rate is outstanding.
